DJ Micro

DJ Micro rose to prominence as one of North America's leading figures through constant national touring and a steady stream of mix albums issued on Moonshine. His climb started along the East Coast when he co-established the Caffeine Records collective in New York in 1991. Far exceeding the scope of a conventional imprint, Caffeine originated as a recurring weekly club event that captured the rising rave culture of the period by organizing numerous parties, vending merchandise, and cultivating an overall identity. Micro performed regularly at these gatherings, focusing on acid breakbeat. In the late 1990s he delivered two compilations for Roadrunner—Coast to Coast (1997) and Caffeine: The Natural Stimulant (1998)—yet his pivotal alliance formed in 1998 with Moonshine. The Los Angeles-based imprint led the domestic CD market by issuing more DJ mix albums than any other U.S. label. His debut outing on the label, Micro-Tech Mix (1998), inaugurated a prolonged series of annual releases that grew steadily in popularity. With each successive album he refined his approach, shifting gradually toward trance while retaining his breakbeat foundation. By the close of the decade he ranked among the East Coast's foremost DJs, placed alongside Frankie Bones and Scott Henry. He maintained a rigorous touring schedule, especially throughout the East Coast, although his appeal extended nationwide; DJ Times magazine featured him on the cover of its 1999 Winter Music Conference issue, underscoring his status as one of North America's top attractions.
