Biography
DJ Richard, who helped establish the outsider house imprint White Material, gained considerable recognition through his brooding and intense approach to ambient techno and house music. Hailing from Rhode Island, his initial forays were in the Providence noise underground prior to his immersion in dance music. Teaming up with his Rhode Island School of Design peer Quinn Taylor, known as Young Male, he relocated to New York City, where they launched the White Material collective alongside Galcher Lustwerk. His first 12-inch, Leech2, appeared as one of the label's inaugural offerings in 2012, with Nailed to the Floor coming two years later. These early pressings sold out rapidly and garnered praise within underground club circles. After moving to Berlin, Richard inked a deal in 2015 with the esteemed German techno outfit Dial, issuing his debut album Grind to favorable notices in outlets like Pitchfork and FACT. The 2017 EP Path of Ruin preceded his second full-length effort, Dies Aræ Xerox, which surfaced the following year.
