Biography
Known widely among hip-hop enthusiasts under the moniker DJ Skee, Scott Keeney has carved out a multifaceted career as a beatmaker, television host, mixtape curator, and music-industry entrepreneur. Although born in New York City, he spent his formative years in Saint Paul, Minnesota, before relocating to Los Angeles, California after high school to pursue closer ties to the music business. Early employment at the Loud record label provided a foothold, yet his profile rose chiefly through after-hours work that included hosting mixtapes for Game and Nipsey Hussle and spinning sets that drew visits from Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Mike Posner. A decisive development unfolded in 2005 when the DJ Skee and Game mixtape You Know What It Is, Vol. 3 arrived, spotlighting the diss track “300 Bars and Runnin’” directed at 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew and thereby igniting a widely publicized feud between the opposing camps. That same year Skee began his satellite-radio tenure with an afternoon program on XM’s Hip-Hop Nation. In 2012 he extended his reach into the commercial label sector by issuing Ryan Beatty’s debut EP, Because of You, through OC Skee records. The following year he premiered the hip-hop-focused television series DJ Skee Live on the AXS TV cable network, while the concurrent Game collaboration OKE Operation Kill Everything marked the rapper’s first release after departing Interscope and rose to number 89 on the Billboard 200.
