DL Down3r

Known professionally as DL Down3r, or sometimes Downer, James Williams crafts rap material from California that shifts between energetic party tracks and reflective pieces shaped by personal hardship. Released in 2015, his debut single “Suga Boom Boom” quickly spread online and reached viral status.

Reaching wider attention required Williams to navigate an extended, difficult route. He spent his early years in demanding Los Angeles neighborhoods, followed by a ten-year term in federal prison that ended with his release in 2010. Several years working in the oil industry came next, after which he began recording music in late 2014, setting accounts of his experiences against instrumentals that moved from relaxed G-funk to assertive trap. A deal with DJ Central Records brought the July 2015 release of “Suga Boom Boom,” a studio realization of a prior freestyle. The track gathered millions of streams and frequent radio requests. Additional singles and EPs followed, among them When We Ride in 2015 and Side Chick in 2018, alongside opening slots for Coolio, Brown Boy, Jay Tablet, and other artists.
