London-based beatmaker Anthony Alexander Campbell, better known to listeners as Dobie, has lent his production and scratching skills to sessions involving Massive Attack, Tricky, Björk, and Soul II Soul. He entered the studio in 1989, contributing tracks by NSO Force Organization to the eclectic catalog of Vinyl Solution. Drawn equally to hip-hop and underground dance music, he fit seamlessly into the Soul II Soul collective, where co-leader Jazzie B enlisted him to handle scratches and production on the group’s 1989 debut, Club Classics, Vol. 1. That connection introduced him to fellow producer Howie B., leading Dobie to join the Nomad Soul project, which secured a deal with Island in 1991. His first solo outing arrived in 1995 as The Dobie EP, released on Howie B.’s Pussyfoot imprint and featuring longtime associate Rodney P. Two years later came the full-length The Sound of One Hand Clapping. Following Pussyfoot’s closure, BBE reissued a reworked version of the album in 2005 under the title The Sound of One Hand Clapping Version 2.5. Big Dada then delivered his second official studio album, We Will Not Harm You, in 2013.
