A car crash that nearly ended his life upended the trajectory of Texas-born rapper the D.O.C. right after his debut album appeared. Dr. Dre, the rapper’s onetime producer, still placed him on the landmark album The Chronic despite the injuries that had curtailed his former rapping ability, an album that itself extended the path first cleared by No One Can Do It Better. The D.O.C. also appeared on Snoop Doggy Dogg’s Doggystyle. Early 1996 brought his return via Helter Skelter, the first album he had issued in nearly seven years. Mixed reviews met the project, which never gathered a wide listenership and slipped from the charts within months.
