Biography
In the summer of 1970 Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley, and Lol Creme released the single “Umbopo” b/w “Roll On” under the recording name Doctor Father. The trio had already scored a number two U.K. hit with “Neanderthal Man” while working as Hotlegs, so they chose to rework “There Ain’t No Umbopo,” a song they had earlier delivered to Jerry Kasanetz and Jeff Katz through a songwriting and production deal whose resulting version appeared under the Crazy Elephant credit. Radio Northsea gave the new single substantial airplay and the track was created entirely by the same musicians responsible for the earlier success, yet it failed to match the performance of the Hotlegs release, after which Doctor Father vanished.
