Originating from Worcester, Massachusetts, the lo-fi electro-pop outfit Dom takes its name from the frontman who withholds his surname. Details about him stay limited because he favors sharing questionable anecdotes about his past and creative work over supplying concrete background information. He has explained in interviews that withholding his full identity stems from worries that creditors might pursue repayment of obligations incurred while he was a foster child. He also maintains that the song "Bochicha," which concerns his cat—an exotic crossbreed illegal to own in many parts of the country—functions as an unofficial fight song for the Worcester Sharks, although management of the minor-league hockey team denies the claim. In addition, he states that Worcester permits artists to carry up to two grams of marijuana without legal repercussions.

Confirmed details indicate that his chief musical partners are guitarist Erik, who likewise omits his last name, and drummer Booby K. The group shows no significant activity before early 2010. Burning Mill Records issued the five-song 10" EP Sun Bronzed Greek Gods that April, simultaneously available as a seven-song digital download. Alternative press outlets soon praised numbers such as "Jesus," which addresses using Ecstasy to recover from a failed relationship, "Living in America," featuring the lyric "It's so sexy to be living in America," and "Burn Bridges."

By fall 2010, Dom had arranged for Gucci Mane to contribute lyrics to a remix of "Living in America," and the band toured large clubs and small theaters on bills with Ratatat. Astralwerks put out an alternate version of Sun Bronzed Greek Gods a few months before Dom released the Family of Love EP in August 2011.
