Biography
An Italian composer and violinist, Gallo created sonatas, symphonies, and sacred works. His surviving output includes one set of six sonatas scored for two violins and another containing thirty-six trio sonatas. Gallo became known chiefly through his unintended link to the Pergolisi forgeries. Twelve trio sonatas were published under Pergolisi’s name after the composer’s death in 1736 and were long cited as early models of the sonata, an attribution that hinged on both the date of Pergolisi’s death and the assumption that he had written them. Most or all of the pieces were in fact by Gallo. Stravinsky drew on the same works for his “Pulcinella,” still crediting them to Pergolisi.
