Born into a household steeped in classical music, Dominic Alldis inherited his parents’ devotion to the art form. His father, the noted choir director and orchestra conductor John Alldis, amassed an extensive catalog of classical recordings. Although trained in the same tradition, Dominic forged a distinctive path that unites classical discipline with jazz and cabaret, the latter two fields claiming the greater share of his professional focus.

He entered the profession in 1985 and soon became a familiar presence at leading clubs across the United Kingdom. Engagements placed him alongside such distinguished figures as Blossom Dearie, Dave Frishberg, and Bob Dorough. His principal influences include Mel Torme, Hoagy Carmichael, Bill Evans, and Erroll Garner; the second of his albums, Turn out the Stars, paid explicit tribute to Evans. Rather than restricting himself to standard repertoire, Alldis has consistently explored French cabaret pieces and Brazilian songs on his recordings. British jazz colleagues with whom he has collaborated encompass Don Weller, Clark Tracey, and the acclaimed jazz singer Stacey Kent. Complementing his pianism, Alldis possesses an appealing, unforced vocal manner well suited to projects such as his album of Noël Coward material.

Drawing upon his background as a classical pianist and cellist, he authored A Classical Approach to Jazz Piano, a volume intended to introduce jazz techniques and subtleties to classically trained players. In acknowledgment of his service to the institution, the Royal Academy of Music named him an Honorary Associate. Alldis remains active as both performer and recording artist throughout the United Kingdom and on the European continent.
