Biography
Born Jason Andrew Williams on 9 May 1974 in Kingston, Jamaica, Don Yute first gained widespread attention through his 1995 duet with Wayne Wonder titled “Sensi Ride.” His delivery echoed the rapid-fire approaches of both Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. He later joined forces with Prezident Brown for the reflective track “African Thing.” That early breakthrough opened doors to sessions with several leading producers, among them Donovan Germain on “All That Glitters,” Bobby Digital on “Funny Funny,” and Steely and Clevie on “Hard Core,” while Colin “Bulby” York handled “Click Click.” Additional singles that kept him visible included “Gal It Wouldn’t Easy,” “You Own Di Man,” “La La La,” “Golden Child,” and “Livin’ In A Dream.” In 1997 he issued his first full-length collection, which gathered the strongest of those recordings. That same year he shared the stage at Sting 97 alongside then-newcomer Sean Paul, who had recently scored a joint success with Spanner Banner on “Ladies Night.” Though regarded as a “name brand” DJ, Don Yute has not yet matched the impact of “Sensi Ride.” During the second half of the decade, Jamaican studios flooded the market with thousands of dancehall singles, causing much of his subsequent output to receive little notice; modest optimism arose when the Jamaican government urged local producers to curb the volume of releases.
