From his teenage years onward, Donald Kachamba drew widespread notice for his exceptional command of music, earning the nickname "the Malawian Mozart". Alongside his brother Daniel (1947--1987), he introduced southern Africa's urban dance styles to international audiences under the name Kachamba Brothers. After Daniel's death, Kachamba has sustained his appeal by weaving together kwela, sinjonjo, saba-saba, huayani and simanje-manje. His performances have reached thirty-three countries across Africa, Europe and the Americas. In tandem with concert appearances, he has joined symposiums and colloquiums devoted to African music. From November 1999 until July 2000, Kachamba will hold an artist-in-residence position at UCLA's Department of Ethnomusicology.
