Makeda, also recognized as the Queen of Sheba, is a captivating singer, dancer, and actress born in Guyana. The name Makeda reflects her adoption of Rastafarian beliefs and lifestyle during adolescence. Slightly past thirty, the accomplished performer is married to Ras Leon Saul and mother to three sons. She established a dance troupe at sixteen before enrolling at the National School of Dance in Guyana, an experience evident in her poised stage presence. Critics reviewing her debut LP, Sweet Victory, have described it as evidence of an emerging reggae talent. Although grounded in dancehall, the material also carries social and political themes. The album presents remixed versions of singles she recorded for Uprising Records, ranging from “Gun Bust” to the title track “Sweet Victory.” Her first visit to Toronto extended three years, during which she became a recognizable television personality and a frequent opening performer for artists including Judy Mowatt, Alton Ellis, and Horace Andy. She went back to Guyana in 1995 for a period of rest before traveling to Jamaica to finalize her debut album. She later returned to Toronto, where she continues to reside, appeared in the musical play Rapatriation, and founded both an entertainment company and a newspaper.
