Producer KutMasta Kurt characterizes the underground rap duo Dopestyle 1231 as "...a bong full of supersonic hydroponic that you ain't had b4." The distinctive "ain't had b4" element stems from the gothic-influenced and quirky approach that rapper MC Dopestyle contributes. Influences ranging from Bauhaus, the Residents, and the Misfits to gangsta rap shape his unique perspective. MC Dopestyle launched his career via a guest spot on Peanut Butter Wolf's 1996 EP Step On Our Egos?, whereas DJ Tom C was securing performances throughout the Bay Area by emulating turntablists such as Kurtis Mantronik, Ced G, and Marley Marl on the wheels of steel. Having submitted a demo to KutMasta Kurt back in 1993, DJ Tom C reacted to his idol's negative response by swearing vengeance, teaming up with MC Dopestyle to form Dopestyle 1231, and honing his abilities over the following ten years. This preparation paid off when the pair released their first album in 2004 under the name KutMasta Kurt Presents Dopestyle 1231.
