A five-piece ensemble from San Francisco began life under the name Belladonna yet retained its deep reverence for British pop and psychedelic traditions after adopting the new identity Dora Flood. The band issued its debut EP, titled 1301, through American Standard Recordings in 1995. Live appearances continued throughout the Bay Area and along the broader Pacific seaboard in the years that followed. Double Play put out the group’s first full-length album, Lost on Earth, in 1999. Roadwork supporting that release took Dora Flood through Europe, the continental United States, and Canada, even though the tour manager was incarcerated during the trek. Drawing its name from a figure in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, the band earned broad critical praise for the 2000 Double Play release Walk a Light Year Mile. Dora Flood shared bills with Mazzy Star and appeared at the North by Northwest Festival. The 2002 album Welcome expanded the group’s sonic palette into a sprawling yet affectionate collection that absorbed touches from the Beatles, the Stone Roses, and Velvet Crush. The fuzzed-out Highlands arrived in 2004, followed three years later by We Live Now.
