Biography
Between 1967 and 1970 Dori Grayson released three singles on Murco, the final one issued through the label’s Peermont subsidiary. A capable yet unexceptional Southern soul vocalist, she worked across multiple idioms yet never located material of real distinction. “Sweet Lovin’ Man” carried an energetic rhythm that echoed Stax artists such as Sam & Dave, while the 1967 release “Try Love” displayed a texture reminiscent of Mary Wells’ early-to-mid-1960s recordings. Somewhat Motown-influenced songs fit her voice more naturally than deeper Southern soul. Every track from those three Murco and Peermont 45s appears on the Kent anthology Shreveport Southern Soul: The Murco Story.
