Born Dorothy Sims on 12 April 1921 in Jacksonville, Florida, the performer who later became known as Dorothy Shay died on 22 October 1978 in Santa Monica, California. Initially establishing herself as a blues vocalist, she joined the Morton Gould Orchestra in 1945 before shifting her focus toward country comedy a few years afterward. Under the nickname Park Avenue Hillbillie she made frequent guest appearances alongside Spike Jones on his radio program. Her screen credits included a role in the 1951 film Comin’ ’Round The Mountain, while subsequent television work featured guest spots on The Waltons. Signing with Columbia Records, she cut the 1947 single “Feudin’ And Fightin’,” drawn from the Broadway show Laffing Room Only, which climbed to number 4 on both the country and pop charts. Shay suffered a fatal heart attack in 1978.
