Doug Cameron excels as an electric violinist who has chosen to concentrate his performances chiefly in crossover and pop/jazz territory. Born and raised in New York, he first picked up the violin at age five. Swift advancement brought appearances with the Westchester Conservatory Orchestra and the New York State Youth Orchestra while he was still in grammar school. Classical repertoire occupied most of his attention through high school, where he also fronted the Baroque Bums, until an emerging taste for improvisation led him to the Allman Brothers’ recordings. At the University of Buffalo he regularly gigged in neighborhood clubs; one evening Gregg Allman sat in, was struck by Cameron’s playing, and soon invited the violinist on tour and into the recording studio. Cameron earned his degree in 1978 and relocated to Los Angeles, where he has since logged extensive studio hours alongside David Benoit, George Benson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Doc Severinson’s fusion band Xebron, Jose Feliciano, and many other artists. As a bandleader he has favored instrumental pop, issuing recordings on Spindletop beginning in 1986 as well as on Narada Equinox and Higher Octave.
