Doug Keith, a singer and songwriter now based in New York, spent his childhood beyond Minneapolis, Minnesota, before the family relocated to Syracuse, New York. Music captured his attention early, prompting guitar lessons by the time he turned ten. Those formative explorations began with '80s college rock acts such as Hüsker Dü and Camper Van Beethoven, yet gradually expanded into classic rock, folk, and the earliest strains of blues. After moving to San Francisco he joined the punk trio the Gods Hate Kansas on bass, acquiring road experience that later proved useful once he crossed the country to New York City. In the first years of the 2000s he performed with the noise rock group Up the Empire while quietly issuing a series of experimental solo recordings under the name the First Person to See an Elephant. Once Up the Empire disbanded, Keith committed to a full solo path and delivered his debut album, Here's to Outliving Me, in 2009. Refining a warmer, acoustic-driven style, he followed two years later with The Lucky Ones, issued on his own imprint, The Village Label. The record drew favorable notice from NPR, The Washington Post, and additional outlets. His third solo effort, Pony, appeared in early 2014 and included contributions from J Mascis along with members of Megafaun.
