The Doughboys emerged from Montreal in 1986 with a direct alternative rock approach. Pipeline Records secured the group six months afterward, and Whatever appeared on the label the following year. Three further releases followed—Home Again in 1988, Happy Accidents in 1990, and Something's Gone Wrong in 1992—before the band moved to A&M and issued Crush in 1993. Its founding roster featured bassist John Bonhead, guitarist Jonathon Cummins, vocalist/guitarist John Kastner, and drummer Brock Pytel, though Peter Arsenault eventually took Bonhead’s place and Paul Newman later assumed the drum chair. The Doughboys disbanded in 1998, giving rise to Bionic and All Systems Go!.
