Larry McCarthy, operating under the alias Bruce while based in Bristol, crafts techno as both a DJ and producer by bridging immediate club material with exploratory studio techniques. Early sparks came from the middle and later stages of dubstep, yet once he began releasing his own material he shifted toward post-dubstep frameworks. That direction soon evolved into a hybrid of techno and bass-driven approaches, crystallized in his first album, the 2018 release Sonder Somatic, which showcased his penchant for irregularly shaped club tracks.

Born in Chesham on London’s periphery, he absorbed rock and punk during his upbringing, going so far as to study drums and perform with several bands. Dance music first reached him through sets by Caspa, Rusko, Andy C, Benga, and Skream at underage events across London. He quickly started producing his own music, taking post-dubstep as the initial foundation. Deeper immersion in techno followed his studies in Creative Music Technology at Bath Spa University, a program whose alumni include Addison Groove, Vessel, and Asusu. After finishing the degree in 2014 he settled in Bristol and delivered his debut EP, Just Getting Started, on Dnous Ytivil, the sister label of Livity Sound.

In the three years that followed he placed EPs with multiple forward-thinking Bristol techno imprints: Not Stochastic appeared on Hessle Audio in 2014, The Trouble with Wilderness came out via Idle Hands in 2016, I’m Alright Mate surfaced on Timedance, and Before You Sleep arrived on Hemlock in 2017. Sonder Somatic returned him to Hessle Audio for its 2018 release.
