Biography
Dr. N. Ramani ranks among the earliest Carnatic artists to attract broader notice in the West. His album The Soul of Indian Flute (World Pacific WPS 21456) appeared after Balachander’s Sounds of the Veena Featuring the Flute of Ramani (WPS 21436).
Born in 1934 in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu—the native town of the Tyagaraja, Muttuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastri trinity—he began flute studies in early childhood under his grandfather A.N. Iyer and later continued with T.R. Mahalingam, both noted flautists. By age twelve he had advanced sufficiently to broadcast on All India Radio. Occasional jugalbandis with the Hindustani flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia began in 1971. Additional collaborations featured vocalists Balamurali Krishna and Pandit Jasraj, violinist T.N. Krishnan and sarodist Amjad Ali Khan. In parallel he maintained a recording career across several labels, among them EMI India, Magnasound/OMI and Shankar.
