Biography
Dr Tumi functions as the stage identity adopted by multi-platinum South African gospel performer and practicing physician Tumišang Makweya, whose work brings restoration to both physical conditions and inner spirit. Serving as lead vocalist for the respected gospel ensemble Intense, Makweya initiated an independent trajectory in 2012 through the prize-winning debut album Heart of a King. Later projects including Love & Grace (2015) and Love on the Cross (2019) reinforced Dr Tumi’s standing as one of South Africa’s foremost gospel figures.
Born in Seshego, Limpopo, Makweya refined his devotional and melodic talents via Sunday school. He completed a six-year medical program at MEDUNSA, the Medical University of South Africa. In pursuit of additional avenues for uplift and recovery, he entered the South African gospel collective Intense, which cultivated a devoted audience throughout the early 2010s. Launching a profitable solo path in 2012 with the chart-topping Heart of a King, the project elevated Makweya—now operating under the Dr Tumi name—into national prominence. The album attained double-platinum certification and collected multiple honors at that year’s Crown Gospel and Metro FM Music Awards. Shortly after, he secured a contract with Universal and issued both his sophomore album Love & Grace and the live set Gathering of Worshippers: Speak a Word to comparable recognition in 2017. A further live recording, Gathering of Worshippers: Beauty for Ashes, appeared in 2018, succeeded by the studio album Love on the Cross in 2019. The next year, Dr Tumi redirected efforts toward medical service by volunteering during the COVID-19 outbreak.
