Biography
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Dream Death stood apart from other underground metal acts of the 1980s by fusing thrash and doom with traditional metal styles, all anchored by a hoarse, hardcore vocal approach. Brian Lawrence on vocals and guitar, Terry Weston on guitar, and Mike Smail on drums established the band in 1984, then immediately tracked their opening demo "More Graveyard Delving." Steady local club shows alongside that recording secured a contract with New Renaissance Records, the second-division thrash specialists, which issued the debut album Journey Into Mystery in 1987. Strong critical notices followed, yet New Renaissance supplied scant promotional backing. After Williams left to join the local thrash outfit Eviction, the remaining members launched Penance. The new group delivered six well-received albums from 1992 through 2005 before dissolving. In 2013 the musicians revived the Dream Death name and released their long-awaited sophomore effort Somnium Excessum. Their third studio album Dissemination appeared in 2016 on Rise Above Records.
