Andre Lett, known as D.R.E.S. tha Beatnik and expanding to Divine Real Essence of Sound, spent his early years in Philadelphia before gaining recognition in Atlanta, Georgia, through his extraordinary ability as a human beatbox. Following the path of Doug E. Fresh, Biz Markie, and Rahzel, the Godfather of Noize, he produced mouth-generated sounds that mirrored the output of drum machines, turntables, and samplers essential to hip-hop. This approach belonged to a fading era before flawless at-home recording became commonplace, yet D.R.E.S. sought to demonstrate that skill rather than equipment defined genuine talent. In 2000 he secured the title at the Amateur World Beatbox Championships, judged by figures such as Rahzel and Grandmaster Flash. He went on to build momentum in his adopted city of Atlanta and, early in 2001, issued the Have Mic...Will Travel EP through the 4 Kings label. That release stood as the first entirely beatbox album of its type and confirmed D.R.E.S. tha Beatnik as both a commanding beatbox practitioner and a capable MC. July 2002 brought another 4 Kings project, Have Mic...Will Travel: The Live Experience, drawn from an April performance at Atlanta's Midtown Café, which presented his studio pieces while emphasizing his beatbox technique before an audience.
