Drink Me acquired the nickname "the quietest rock and roll ever made" after forming in 1986 as a drum-and-guitar noise duo. Mark Amft and Wynne Evans soon reduced the lineup to acoustic guitars alone. Adding accordion, tambourine, kazoo, and other non-electric instruments, the pair pursued a relaxed, stripped-down blend of country, folk, rock, and jazz on their self-titled debut, issued by Bar/None Records in 1992. A single called "Cherry Pie" followed in 1993 (distinct from the Warrant hit of the same title), and a five-song EP appeared the next year on New York's Hello Recording Club. Drink Me's second album, Sleep, arrived in 1995, its songs centered on the universal pastime of falling asleep once the lights are out.
