Formed in 1997, the German electro/IDM trio Drøn unites Christoph Abert, Frederik Dahlke, and Ingo Zobel. Their expansive productions draw strong inspiration from Atom Heart and Pete Namlook, combining clicking and shape-shifting beats with song titles that sometimes resist easy interpretation, while an accessible yet somewhat removed melodic presence sets the music apart from the many acts mimicking Autechre’s alienating style. The group’s first full-length effort, Parsec, appeared on the German electronic imprint Elektrolux in 2000, with Xenologix arriving the next year. In 2002 Mikrolux, an Elektrolux sublabel, issued both the Eve Shores EP and the third album Homeworld. During 2006 the members briefly adopted the name Signalform and issued Private Channel through Shima Records; the following year Lovethechaos released Understanding Media, a joint project with Tachikoma. Returning to the Drøn identity in 2013, they self-published the limited ambient CD-R Hd 188753. Also in 2013 they contributed a piece to the online tribute compilation Die Welt Ist Klang honoring the late Pete Namlook, which Carpe Sonum Records later issued as an eight-disc box set in 2014. The same label put out the trio’s fourth proper album, Comm, in 2015.
