Biography
During the 1990s and 2000s, producer, composer, and mixmaster Dub Gabriel concentrated on merging electronica with sounds drawn from multiple continents, treating electronica as ambient textures while sourcing world elements from the Middle East, India, and both Arabic North Africa and sub-Saharan traditions of West and Central Africa. Although the label electronica spans aggressive techno and rave extremes as well as relaxed downtempo and chillout styles, Gabriel’s productions tended to occupy the middle ground. A New York City resident, he brought musical sophistication together with a funky, energizing sensibility. His recordings, though dominated by electronic processes and extensive programming, never remained entirely programmed; instead they regularly paired programmed beats with acoustic instruments rooted in specific cultures, among them Indian tabla drums. In this way Gabriel bridged contemporary studio techniques of those decades with acoustic tools that had existed for centuries. His activities also extended beyond the studio. Beginning in 1999 he organized dance-focused events known as Brooklyn Massive Parties, some drawing between five hundred and one thousand attendees from across New York. Working as a DJ and mixmaster, he supplied music for private functions hosted by Denis Leary, teen-pop figure Britney Spears, and assorted other high-profile figures. Baboon Records, the New York imprint, issued his album Ascend in 2003.
