Formed in 2005 and based in Leeds, the UK indie rock band emerged from the remnants of Sammy USA after that earlier group had been dropped from an ill-fated major-label deal. Its lineup comprised Jon Foulger (b. Jersey, Channel Islands; vocals), Jim Foulger (b. Jersey, Channel Islands; guitar), Jon Maher (bass), James Kirkbright (drums), and Katherine Botterill (keyboards). Shortly after signing with Nude Records, the band issued the limited-edition 7-inch “Potential Futures” on Transgressive Records in July. Subsequent singles “Pressure On You” and “Animal” attracted additional coverage, aided by endorsements from fellow Leeds act the Kaiser Chiefs. Their debut album, The Bright Lights And What I Should Have Learned, delivered melodic guitar pop whose lyrics dwelt on isolation and dashed hopes in a manner reminiscent of Suede’s earliest recordings.

Although it earned favorable notices, the record was ignored by listeners captivated by the Kaiser Chiefs’ jaunty anthems, prompting the Duels to exit Nude soon afterward. Their follow-up, The Barbarians Move In, appeared as a digital release in February 2008 and received a physical edition on This Is Fake DIY two months later. The album’s brooding experimentalism signaled clear advancement beyond the first LP and reflected the group’s deliberate move further from mainstream appeal.
