Dunes

Dunes, based in Los Angeles, fuses the ethereal, swirling textures of dream pop with the spare, focused restraint of post-punk. The group’s core consists of vocalist and guitarist Stephanie Chan, baritone guitarist and bassist Mark Greshowak, and drummer and vocalist Kate Hall. Before forming Dunes, Chan performed with the Austin outfits Finally Punk and the Carrots, Greshowak played in Seattle’s Talbot Tagora, and Hall served as drummer for the widely admired Mika Miko. The band’s first outing arrived in 2010 as a limited-edition, self-titled EP on Mexican Summer, followed by two 7"s—one issued on Art Fag in 2010 and the other on Teenage Teardrops in 2011—along with a cassette on Ooga Booga; each of those early recordings displayed a more lo-fi sensibility than the band’s debut full-length, Noctiluca, which PPM issued in early 2012.
