A skilled bop-oriented improviser who produced notable recordings for Enja, Duško Gojković, also known as Dusko Goykovich, performed across Yugoslavia and Germany prior to his initial journey to America alongside Marshall Brown’s International Youth Band, appearing at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. He studied at Berklee from 1961 to 1963, then joined the orchestras of Maynard Ferguson (1963-1964) and Woody Herman (1964-1966) before returning to Germany, where he led a group with Sal Nistico in 1966. Later he performed with the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band (1968-1973) and co-led a twelve-piece ensemble with Slide Hampton (1974-1975). Although Miles Davis remained his chief influence, Gojković developed an extroverted personal style of his own while staying highly active in Europe throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Recording continued well into the 2010s, including the 2019 Enja album Sketches of Yugoslavia, issued a few years before his death at age 91 in Munich, Germany, on April 5, 2023.
