Biography
Over more than five decades as one of the Netherlands' premier jazz ensembles, the Dutch Swing College Band has undergone repeated shifts in personnel. Although the current members share no connection with the founding roster, they maintain the historically grounded style established at the outset.
Since assuming leadership following Peter Schilperoort's death in 1990, clarinetist Bob Kaper (1939- ) has guided the ensemble; he first joined as a temporary substitute for Schilperoort amid the latter's illness in 1966 and chose to stay. As the fourth director in the band's lineage, Kaper follows Frans Vink, Jr. (1945-46), Joop Schrier (1955-60), and Schilperoort himself (1946-55; 1960-1990). Before this role, Kaper had already directed the Beale Street Seven, which he established in 1957.
The group operated on an amateur basis from 1945 until it turned professional in 1960, attaining an initial high point during the late 1940s through engagements backing visiting jazz figures that included Sidney Bechet, Joe Venuti, and Teddy Wilson.
An album titled A Tribute to the Dutch Swing College Band, drawn from material linked to the Holland-based ensemble, was later released by the New Melbourne Jazz Band.
