Biography
EAR PWR delivers a scorching yet whimsical intensity that stands alongside the Go! Team in reshaping indie rock, fusing catchy hooks with daring sonic risks and blending childlike sweetness with gritty edges under the glow of a grinning 1980s acid house emblem. Reynolds threads airy, endearing chants of whimsical insight on topics like manatees and beloved sweaters through the duo’s rapid, ecstatic bursts of sound. The project took shape in the mid-2000s in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after Reynolds formed both a creative and personal partnership with local musician Devin Booze. Their volatile stage presence—marked by Reynolds vocalizing in a trance-like state while Booze hurled himself across the platform and among spectators—quickly drew an audience. Following several 7"s issued by a Chapel Hill independent label, the pair relocated from North Carolina to Baltimore, where they joined Carpark Records and issued the effervescent Super Animal Brothers II in 2009. Although that record drew uneven critical notices, strong word-of-mouth expanded their following as the duo readied its follow-up, EAR PWR, which arrived in 2011.
