Biography
Earl Howard crafts music through elaborate saxophone lines combined with electronics generated both in performance and via recording. This New York-based creator has lately produced pieces that merge acoustic chamber ensembles with electronic elements. Professional activity began for Howard during the 1970s; his comparative youth and distinct spelling set him apart from the earlier pianist, composer, and guitarist Earle Howard, while their artistic directions remain markedly dissimilar. After earning a degree from the California Institute of the Arts in 1974, he promptly directed attention toward writing for and working alongside musicians grounded in the jazz tradition. A frequent partner throughout his career remains pianist and composer Anthony Davis.
Davis featured Howard’s “Particle W” on a Gramavision recording. Percussionist, bandleader, and composer Gerry Hemingway has likewise championed Howard’s works by releasing a solo-percussion interpretation of “D.R. (Auricle)”. Issued by Mutable in 2003, the album Strong Force stands as one of Howard’s defining achievements, its elevated musical intensity stemming from both the composer and an accomplished group of players. Davis and Hemingway participate, joined by Anne Lebaron on harp and Ernst Reijseger on cello.
