South African house DJ and producer Echo Deep crafts an inventive fusion of Afrohouse and deep house that delivers soulful, upbeat, and life-affirming energy. Born Tshepo Molefe in Soweto, he developed an early passion for music by tuning into the radio each afternoon once school ended. He started tagging along with a neighborhood choir during studio sessions to observe the mechanics of recording, and on one occasion he requested a turn at the DAW, an experience that sparked his immediate commitment to creating original material. Drawing inspiration from leading Afrohouse figures such as Culoe de Song, Black Coffee, and Vinny da Vinci, he refined his technique through persistent demo submissions that eventually secured a label placement, after which he relocated to Johannesburg.
Echo Deep has issued multiple hit singles, among them “Lies,” “Like That,” “Sabisayo,” and “Who You Are,” along with various collaborations and EPs; his first solo album, The Music City, came out in 2015 via Blaq Diamond Boyz Records. Valued for his exacting precision, timing, and mixing expertise, he has performed on television, appeared alongside several of his musical influences, and maintained recurring radio shifts in both South Africa and Britain. In 2020 the City Awards named him a nominee for producer of the year.
