Biography
Formed in Brooklyn, New York, the Echoes operated as a white doo-wop ensemble whose lone Top 20 placement came with the 1961 single ‘Baby Blue’. Its members were Harry Boyle (b. 1943, Brooklyn, New York, USA), Thomas Duffy (b. 1944, Brooklyn, New York, USA), and Tom Morrissey (b. 1943, Brooklyn, New York, USA). Originally known as the Laurels, they acquired ‘Baby Blue’, written by teachers Sam Guilino and Val Lagueux, from a participant in another act who had declined to cut it. After adopting the Echoes name, the trio paid for their own demo; Jack Gold, owner of Paris Records, chose to issue the track on the new SRG label he was launching. Seg-Way Records later picked it up, sending the record to number 12. Despite several strong follow-up sides, the group never repeated that success and eventually disbanded. An album collecting their best work appeared once a white doo-wop revival took hold in the New York area during the 80s.
