The band's approach earned the label of refreshed progressive rock, thanks to its roster of members schooled in classical traditions and operating at a high level of expertise, specifically vocalist Ray Weston, guitarist/vocalist Brett Kull, keyboard player Chris Buzby, bassist Tom Hyatt and drummer Paul Ramsey. Echolyn secured a deal with Sony once they had refined their skills on instruments alongside tight vocal harmonies across a trio of self-released projects. Glenn Rosenstein handled production duties for the ensemble, which put out As the World during March 1995. Disbandment occurred toward the end of that year, followed by the 1996 issuance of When the Sweet Turns Sour, a collection featuring previously unheard demos and concert captures, among them the final track they laid down, "This Time Alone." Hyatt's departure marked the 2000 reformation after a four-year hiatus, with Weston assuming bass responsibilities and Jordan Perlson, a fresh addition, sharing drumming duties alongside Ramsey. This refreshed lineup committed Cowboy Poems Free to tape.
