Ed Gein took their name from the infamous American serial killer whose crimes later influenced the films Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The trio forged a punishing, unrelenting sound that fused the crushing force of thrash metal and grindcore with the confrontational political outrage and social critique typical of hardcore punk. Based in upstate New York, the group featured Jesse Daino on drums, Aaron Jenkins on bass, and Graham Reynolds on guitar, with all three members handling vocals. After completing a three-song demo in 2002, they issued their debut full-length, It's a Shame a Family Can Be Torn Apart by Something as Simple as a Pack of Wild Dogs, the following year. Extensive touring across the United States and Europe helped cultivate a dedicated audience, whether drawn to or undeterred by the band’s extreme sonic and lyrical approach, leading to a deal with Black Market Activities, the subsidiary imprint of Metal Blade Records, ahead of their second album, Judas Goats and Dieseleaters, which appeared in 2005. The band intended to begin work on a third album in 2007.
