Biography
Ed Wynne first gained recognition as the founder and lead guitarist of the English psych/space rock outfit Ozric Tentacles. In 2019 he issued his initial solo outing, Shimmer into Nature.
Born during 1961 in Wandsworth, London, as the offspring of sculptor David Wynne, he grew up amid a bohemian household that regularly hosted celebrated musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, and George Harrison, the last of whom prompted Wynne to begin playing guitar. At age 16 he left school to focus on music, with his parents’ full support. Following stints in various groups, he assembled the instrumental psychedelic/space rock ensemble Ozric Tentacles in 1983. Deeply shaped by Steve Hillage and Gong, the band’s expansive soundscapes fused rock with jazz fusion, ambient dub, and world music while integrating synthesizers, samplers, drum programming, and further electronic components. Early cassette releases and extended sets at free festivals, occasionally stretching until dawn, brought them visibility; by the late 1980s and early 1990s the group had attracted a devoted audience within New Age Traveler and “crusty” circles. The Ozrics, as fans came to call them, issued a steady stream of live and studio albums, their lineup shifting repeatedly as members departed for projects such as Eat Static, Senser, Jamiroquai, and Hole. By the early 2000s the band had turned into a family enterprise that included Wynne’s wife Brandi—later divorced yet still performing together—and his son Silas Neptune, himself an established musician. Throughout these changes Wynne remained the sole continuous participant. From 1986 onward he also maintained the more electronically oriented side project Nodens Ictus alongside musicians from Eat Static. Shimmer into Nature appeared on KScope in 2019, its uplifting tone echoing his primary band’s aesthetic and drawing from locations ranging across the Colorado Mountains to the Firth of Forth.
