Biography
Eddie Levert fronted the O'Jays, the premier Philly soul ensemble, bringing the same assurance to deeply felt ballads, high-energy dance tracks, and socially conscious anthems. His career stretches back to the closing years of the 1950s, during which time he also lent support to fellow performers. For Philadelphia International artist Jean Carn he supplied both words and production on the modest 1979 success “My Love Don’t Come Easy,” while his production work helped shape Troop’s “Mamacita,” which climbed to the second slot on the R&B chart in 1988. Two collaborative projects with his son Gerald appeared as Father and Son in 1995 and Something to Talk About in 2007, the second arriving after Gerald’s passing. Into the final years of the 2010s Levert remained on stage with the O’Jays, and within that same span he issued his initial solo efforts, I Still Have It in 2012 and Did I Make You Go Ooh? in 2016.
