Edge City, a country rock outfit, consists of singer/songwriter Jim Patton alongside vocalist Sherry Brokus. Although the pair initially collaborated in Baltimore, Maryland, their commitment to an unapologetic Southern roots rock aesthetic prompted a move to Austin, Texas. The Orchard imprint issued their first full-length effort, Mystery Ride, in 2001, which included contributions from David Grissom, known for his work with John Mellencamp, in addition to other musicians. To flesh out the arrangements, the group incorporated traditional roots rock elements like fiddles, mandolins, and Dobros, while Patton drew lyrical inspiration from 20th-century American literary figures including F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, incorporating as well his own recollections from his Baltimore origins.
