Biography
While finishing their final year at Berklee, songwriter, vocalist and keyboardist Dave Sherman joined forces with bassist Dan Grennes to start creating music. After testing material in Boston clubs, the pair relocated to Nashville in pursuit of publishing deals. There they collaborated with an array of session players and launched Edison With the Weather (EWTW) in time to cut their first album, Pop Fictions.
Once that record was complete, Sherman and Grennes returned EWTW to New York, whose jazz-friendly environment suited the group’s sound, and recruited drummer Shinya Miyamoto plus guitarist Ben Butler for a follow-up project. The expanded lineup tracked Off the Cuff, which appeared in 1996 and delved into jazz-rock fusion. Dissatisfied with the outcome, Sherman and Grennes invited another Berklee classmate, drummer Andy Sanesi, whose deep jazz roots shifted the ensemble’s direction.
Now reduced to a trio of Berklee graduates, EWTW entered the studio with producer Prince E. Strickland and completed The Big Bang Theory. Three years afterward, in 2001, the musicians adopted the name Goodbye Girl Friday to signal a fresh outlook on their work and introduced themselves under the new moniker with the 2003 release Mr. and Mrs.
