Biography
Chicago native Eric D. Johnson emerged in the late '90s as a versatile and unpredictable force, serving as singer, songwriter, film composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist while fronting the popular Midwest folk-rock band the Fruit Bats, which he founded. Through Sub Pop he guided the group across a string of well-received albums that began with 2001’s Echolocation and continued through 2011’s Tripper. During those same years he contributed to projects by Califone, Sally Timms, Vetiver, and the Shins, the last of whom he joined as a member for a period. His first film score arrived in 2010 for the romantic comedy Ceremony, after which he supplied original music for Our Idiot Brother, Smashed, Nature Calls, After Tiller, Goodbye World, Date & Switch, and Life Partners. Johnson also produced Breathe Owl Breathe’s 2013 album Passage of Pegasus and Animal Heart, the 2014 solo release by Cardigans vocalist Nina Persson. In 2014 he issued his debut solo effort under the EDJ moniker, a self-titled record.
