Biography
Beyond his standing as a noted composer, Edmond Audran also sang tenor roles in comic opera and held a position as an organist. Among his output stand several “little” operas together with sacred pieces written for church use; one such work was a funeral march honoring Meyerbeer. The success of “La cigale et la fourmi” brought Audran international acclaim, although his scores displayed no innovative traits. He drew on a range of effective rhythms, and his melodies found wide favor.
