Biography
An exceptional Brazilian drummer, Edison Machado originated the samba o prato approach, which places the samba rhythm on the cymbals. From bossa nova’s earliest days he remained a central figure, appearing on numerous recordings—credited and uncredited alike—such as Sergio Mendes e Bossa Trio, Bossa Três, Rio 65 Trio, Victor Assis Brasil Toca Jobim, Rio 65 Trio, Sérgio Mendes’s Você Ainda Não Ouviu Nada!, Os Bossa 3, and others. During the 1950s he backed most of the artists who played Rio’s 52nd Street, Beco das Garrafas. He issued the LP Edison Machado É Samba Novo in 1963. In the 1970s Machado relocated first to Europe and later to the United States. Fronting the Edison Machado Quartet, he helped establish samba-jazz in leading jazz clubs and documented the style on the 1970 LP Obras.
