Biography
Born into an extensive family of musicians, Edward joined the Temple Church as a chorister in 1843 and, not long after, took up the posts of organist and choirmaster. Under his leadership and after a recent restoration, the church’s music came to serve as an exemplar for choirs in cathedrals and parishes throughout England. He was instrumental in establishing the College of Organists as well as the Musical Association. His treatise, "The Organ: its History and Construction," remains in use today as a wealthy source on the history of the organ. Hopkins also founded the periodical "The Organist and the Choirmaster."
