Edward L. Crain entered the world in Texas and was promoted as an authentic Texas Cowboy. During the 1920s and 1930s, his time was spent working on ranches and participating in cattle drives, all while mastering the guitar, fiddle, and mandolin. Various Dallas radio programs featured his performances, and he cut multiple tracks for Columbia in the early 1930s, one of which—a rendition of "Bandit Cole Younger"—appeared years afterward in Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music from 1952. In his later years, after settling in Oregon, Crain revisited the studio to issue a fresh take on "Bandit Cole Younger" through the American Record Corporation in 1970.
