Biography
Trombonist Edwin Williams first surfaced on recording sessions throughout the initial years of the 1970s, with his given name appearing interchangeably as Ed, Eddie, or Edward. His body of work reflects an equal balance across R&B, soul, vocal music, and large-ensemble jazz contexts. Critics who monitor the boundaries of jazz have granted the swinging designation to only a limited number of his contributions. Several of those fall within big-band settings such as Malachi Thompson & Africa Brass, the Jazz Members Big Band, and the Bill O'Connell Big Band. Even so, the trombonist drew his widest notice through the 1990s output of R&B chanteuse Koko Taylor, whose vocal timbre meshes especially effectively with the horn. Williams supplied original compositions tailored to her delivery, among them the track “Never Trust a Man.”
