Biography
Roman Flügel, a longtime figure in dance music with numerous aliases to his credit, operates Eight Miles High as one of those projects. Through this guise the producer has delivered an array of stylistically wide-ranging 12" releases on his own Klang Elektronik imprint beginning in the mid-'90s. Work issued as Eight Miles High ranges from understated pieces intended for museum environments to club-oriented tracks and experimental compositions that resist easy categorization. A self-titled 12" and The Gift both surfaced in 1996; afterward Flügel kept the EMH project largely dormant until 2000, when The End of the Beginning and Chamber Musik appeared as a further pair of 12"s. The 2002 Katalog anthology arrived on Klang to give CD listeners a consolidated overview. Although the name references the Byrds song of identical title, Flügel first encountered the track through Roxy Music's version. [See also: Sensorama, Alter Ego, Acid Jesus.]
