German death metal outfit Eisregen stands out primarily through its choice to deliver all vocals in German rather than English, as well as through repeated placement on the index maintained by Die Bundesprüfstelle für Jugendgefährdende Medien. The 1998 album Krebskolonie, for instance, received a verbreitungsverbot that bars public performance before listeners younger than eighteen, a decision triggered by lyrics the authority labeled "grausamen, menschenverachtenden, frauenfeindlichen und verrohenden." Subsequent records Farbenfinsternis (2001) and Wundwasser (2004) likewise landed on the index, measures that curtailed mainstream sales yet simultaneously heightened the group’s notoriety. Capitalizing on that notoriety, Blutbahnen (2007) achieved the band’s strongest chart entry up to that point, landing at number 32 on the German album chart.

The quartet came together in Tambach-Dietharz, Thuringia, in 1995 when vocalist Michael "Blutkehle" Roth, guitarist Michael "Bursche" Lenz, keyboardist Daniel "DF" Fröbing, and drummer Ronny "Yantit" Fimmel joined forces. Several demo tapes paved the way for the official debut, the 7" single "Fleischhaus" (1997). A deal with Last Episode followed, leading to the full-length Zerfall (1998). Krebskolonie arrived the same year and, upon its 2003 reissue, drew the BPJM index in August of that year. The record also introduced violinist Theresa "2T" Trenks, whose contributions continued on every subsequent album through her exit in 2006, and it has remained a perennial favorite among fans.

After issuing the "Fleischfestival" EP (1999), Leichenlager (2000), and Farbenfinsternis (2001), Eisregen parted ways with Last Episode amid the label’s impending insolvency and moved to Massacre Records. The new imprint first handled reissues—pairing Krebskolonie with the "Fleischfestival" EP in 2003 and Zerfall with the Das Ende des Weges demo in 2004—before delivering the first fresh material in three years, Wundwasser (2004). That album became the band’s first to appear on the charts, holding position number 87 for a single week. Hexenhaus, issued as a CD-EP/DVD in 2005, came next, and 2007 brought both the full-length Blutbahnen and the follow-up EP Eine Erhalten.
